D3 is the geometric mean of A3 (297 × 420 mm) and B4 (250 × 353 mm). Its sides are about 8 % shorter than those of A3, and its area is 84 % of A3. The step from D3 up to A3 is the same as the step from A3 up to C3.
Cutting D3 from A3
You cannot buy D3 paper ready-made. The easiest way is to trim an A3 sheet: 25 mm off the width and 35 mm off the height. An A3 guillotine does it in two cuts.
Frame and envelope for D3
A 30 × 40 cm frame takes D3 with 14 mm to spare on each side and 7.5 mm at the top and bottom. A C3 envelope takes it flat, a C4 envelope only folded once.
