D2 is the geometric mean of A2 (420 × 594 mm) and B3 (353 × 500 mm). Its sides are about 8 % shorter than those of A2, and its area is 84 % of A2. The step from D2 up to A2 is the same as the step from A2 up to C2.
Cutting D2 from A2
You cannot buy D2 paper ready-made. The easiest way is to trim an A2 sheet: 35 mm off the width and 49 mm off the height. At this size a long cutting mat and a steel ruler work best, or ask a print shop to trim the sheet.
Framing D2
In a standard 40 × 60 cm frame, D2 leaves 7.5 mm on each side and 27.5 mm at the top and bottom. A mount that is slightly deeper at the top and bottom makes this look intentional.
